How to register a death

A death must be registered within 5 days (8 in Scotland) at the register office in the area where the death has occurred. Under most circumstances a relative will register but it can be anyone who was present during death, the owner of the property where death occurred or the person arranging the funeral.

Information about the deceased you will need

  • Full name and any previous names
  • Date and place of birth
  • Date and place of death
  • Date and place of marriage or civil partnership
  • Occupation (and if the deceased was a married woman/widow the name and occupation of her husband)
  • If the deceased was married, the date of birth of surviving partner
  • Full name, address and qualification or person registering the death.
  • Usual address

Items you will need to take

  • The medical cause of death certificate (issued by the GP, hospital or coroner)
  • The deceased's medical card (if available)
  • Money to purchase copy death certificates to administer the estate

The Registrar will give you

  • The Registrar's Certificate for Burial or Cremation (green coloured form which should be handed to the funeral director)
  • A Certificate of Registration which is needed in order to claim benefits from the Department of Work and Pensions
  • Copies of the entry in the register - on payment of a fee, £3.50 locally

In Wirral it is necessary to make an appointment to register a death
